Farm life is foreign and exotic to my kids. They, like probably most other children of parents reading this post, have spent their entire (albeit young) lives within the confines of city blocks. And they never tire of opportunities to take a break from the traffic and get a little more rural. Luckily, you don’t have to travel too far to get a taste of the farm in our cities. In some cases, the farm might even be in your own neighborhood. Try visiting one of these spots to play farmer (or pioneer) for the day:
Saturday Mornings on the Farm at
Gale Woods Farm
7210 County Road 110 W., Minnetrista, MN 55364
Saturday, June 21, 2014 • 9:30am – 12pm
Cost: $5/pp, 20% discount for groups of 4+
This working farm invites families to get hands-on with animals and agriculture. Explore the barn, meet the animals and help with chores on Saturday mornings through August 30.
Pioneer Sampler: School, Work & Play at
Gibbs Museum of Pioneer and Dakotah Life
2097 W. Larpenteur Ave., Falcon Heights, MN 55113
Saturday, June 21, 2014 • 10am – 4pm
Cost: $8/adults, $7/seniors, $5/kids 4+, free for members
We loved attending the Gibbs Museum special events with our Ramsey County Historical Society membership last year. The Pioneer Sampler includes activities such as pony rides, old-time crafts and games, candle-dipping, and a lesson in the one-room schoolhouse. Lunch is included in the admission fee.
Farm Tour – Meet the Milkmakers at
Dodge Nature Center Farm
Farm Entrance: 1701 Charlton St., West Saint Paul, MN 55118
Saturday, June 21, 2014 • 10 – 11:30am
Cost: $3/adults, $1.50/kids, free ages 2 & under.
Pre-registration is recommended.
We’ve toured the Dodge Nature Center’s picturesque farm with our ECFE classes many times (a testament to how much we like it!). This tour will get you up close to the animals, through the pasture and up into the hayloft. Special to this tour: a chance to learn about the milking process and to churn some butter.
Have you heard of any places in the Twin Cities area to get a farm-life fix? We’d love to hear from you!
